If you're sexually active or have been in the past, it's important to get tested. Some STIs are symptomless, so the only way to detect them is with a test. The earlier you do this, the easier it will be to treat you and your partner. In more serious cases like HIV and Hepatitis C, early treatment will avoid long term consequences and increase life expectancy.
